The Tottenham defender found the net on two occasions as Tottenham prolonged their winning streak on the road in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their recently opened stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven struck on two occasions from set-pieces in the first half to place their strong form at risk, and they were unable to mount a comeback before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - headed home a final goal to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had levelled the tally five minutes after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a series of fine stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the VAR stepped in, advising the match official to check the score on the screen and the official decided that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had impeded with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win elevates the manager's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and are half a dozen points clear of the relegation zone.

After a drab midweek performance in the Champions League against the French side, where they managed a only two shots on target, the manager chose the French striker up front instead of former Toffees player Richarlison.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be reckoned with.

Tottenham's first goal came from a cleverly executed corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball back across the six-yard box for an unmarked Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in first-half stoppage time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair handled superbly with the numerous deliveries thrown their way by the opposition.

Everton's new home had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off slightly and supporters flocked to the exits after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation will be.

The forward and the other striker - the Everton's two established centre-forwards - had scored only a single goal combined before Sunday's match.

And they were failed to contribute to that miserable record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional shot that would have challenged Vicario.

Barry, as well, was unable to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It wasn't for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's offensive moves came through Grealish and Ndiaye, who relentlessly delivered threatening crosses into the Spurs penalty area.
